Description

The North Gateway to the churchyard of St Nicholas' Church, located adjacent to Bartholomew Street, dates from around 1770 and is possibly designed by Fuller White. It is built in the Strawberry Hill Gothick style using Portland stone ashlar. The gateway features a central pointed archway topped with an ogee pediment that includes a quatrefoil in the tympanum. This archway is flanked by attached columns with pinnacles. The sections of the wall on either side are also terminated by columns and pinnacles, and they contain arched openings with staybars. Above these sections, there is a ramped-up parapet over an enriched cornice. The gateway is completed with double iron gates.
