Description
The bridge over the River Kennet, built between 1769 and 1772 by James Clarke, replaced an earlier wooden bridge from 1726. It is constructed of brick with stone ashlar dressings and features a three-span structure, although the two outer spans are now hidden by approach roads on either side. The central span is segmental-arched, with rusticated block voussoirs and a four-bay balustrade supported by cast-iron balusters. At both the north and south ends, there are remnants of recesses that likely served as shelters. Stone pilasters with moulded caps support semi-circular arches adorned with scroll keystones. Three of the arches have been integrated into the adjacent shops, while the plinth serves as a doorway to No. 1 Bridge Street.
