Description
1 Northbrook Street is a building dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, specifically after 1791, and was renovated in 1979. It is part of a bridge head development that includes Nos 2 and 4 Bridge Street and No 104 Northbrook Street. The building stands three storeys tall, with a lower ground floor and a central dormer. It features three windows, with a splayed one at the corner. The hipped slate roof and red brick construction are complemented by a cornice and blocking course. The windows have gauged flat brick arches and are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, while the first-floor windows are set in arched recesses. There is a cast iron balcony at the first floor level. The modern shop front incorporates a splayed bay that was originally a bridge shelter from 1769-72, now serving as a shop window. Notably, architectural historians Betjeman and Piper suggest that this building was designed by a distinguished local architect known for Kimber's Almshouses, which are now demolished.
