Description

The main block and chapel at Queen Anne's School is a notable building constructed in the 1870s, designed by Alfred Waterhouse for Mr. West. It features a 'U' plan and was later altered and extended by Joseph Morris between 1893 and 1896, with further modifications made in the interwar period.

The south front of the building is symmetrical, comprising a two-and-a-half to three-storey block made of red brick with stone quoins and dressings, accented by occasional blue-black diaper patterns. It has five bays and four gables, with the two principal gables projecting to flank a central gabled porch. The gables are coped and feature moulded kneelers and brick block cornice returns. A moulded string course runs above the ground floor. The slate roof is topped with grooved chimneys positioned at the sides of the gables. The windows are mullioned casement types with stop-chamfered reveals and brick relieving arches above. A Caernarvon arch fanlight is situated above the door, with the porch flanked by tall single-light windows and a three-light window above a central blind window that contains a monogram panel, possibly reading "EMM" over "86" in leafy relief. There is a secondary porch at the angle of the right-hand bay and the principal right-hand gable.

The chapel, added in 1893 by Sir Reginald Bloomfield, is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and dividing buttresses, featuring a slate roof with a parapet on the south side. Inside, the school has undergone alterations, but the hall still retains a Gothic fireplace and some heating fixtures.
