Description
West Memorial Hall is a Grade II listed building located on Gosbrook Road, constructed between 1865 and 1866 by Alfred Waterhouse. This Gothic-style structure was originally a Baptist Free Church and is made of red brick with a gable end facing the street. It features a stone plinth and dressings, along with a banded tile roof. The gable includes blue brick bands above and below a rose window, and the chimney on the south gable showcases tumbled brick. The tympanum above a pair of lancet windows to the left displays blue and red brick herringbone work.
A notable aspect of the building is the right-hand bay, which includes a hipped rectangular stair turret leading to a gallery, with external stairs on the quadrant wall at the base. The west side has a four-bay wall with an arched passage beneath buttresses, a cogged eaves cornice, and paired lancets, except for a half dormer on the north side. There is also a 1911 extension to the east that features a central gable, reflecting the style of the north gable. The interior has been rearranged, showcasing an interesting display of materials.
