Description
Caversham Baptist Free Church, built between 1875 and 1877, was designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse. It is situated on a challenging corner site and showcases Gothic architectural style. The church features a six-bay rain hall facing Prospect Street, a two-stage tower at the southwest corner, and a gable end front to the south. The structure is made of red brick with a stone-capped plinth and inner window reveals, complemented by grey-blue decorative elements on the south front and a banded tile roof.
The west front includes paired lancet windows separated by buttresses that contain tumbled brickwork. The two right-hand bays have lower windows adorned with herringbone patterns and decorative infill. A corbelled brick eaves cornice is present in two layers, and there is a small two-bay projection to the north. The tower features chamfered corners, two tall stages, and a decorative upper stage, topped with a tall hipped roof and a weathervane.
On the south front, there is a stepped triple lancet window with an over arch and decorative infill below, along with a central gabled porch flanked by lean-to annexes. The gable and the kneeler to the right are decorated with punched lozenges. The interior of the church has been well maintained. Additionally, a low brick wall with stone chamfered capping angles to the corner site fronting South Street. This building is recognized as a fine example of Waterhouse's skillful use of various materials, including brick, stone, and differently colored roof tiles.
