Description

173-183, Kings Road, comprises three blocks of two houses each, linked by single-storey connections, and dating from after 1832. These form the principal houses of the former Waterloo Place. The blocks are broadly similar in design, differentiated by the application of different classical orders: modified Doric at numbers 173/175 and 181/183, and composite at numbers 177/179. Each block extends over three storeys and a basement, with numbers 173-179 also having attics. The buildings are constructed of Bath stone, with slate roofs featuring a central chimney stack with multiple pots.

The facades are channelled at ground floor level, with a moulded string course, entablature, and blocking course. Corner and central pilasters frame two three-storey bowed fronts, each with a single window. The frontages are four bays wide, with glazing bar sashes (cornices on the first floor). A central break incorporates bowed sections. The ground floor windows are French casements with balconies featuring contemporary cast-iron railings and decoration. The doors in the outer bays have segmental heads and two panels. Numbers 171 and 185 are linked to numbers 169 and 183 respectively by recessed Ionic porticoes in antis with parapets.

The rear elevation of numbers 177/179 features full-height bows; those of numbers 181/183 have ground floor bows. Interior features include a contemporary staircase with a moulded rail and stone steps at number 173, as well as delicate undercut cornices, similar to those found in contemporary houses in Cheltenham. Number 183 also has a contemporary staircase.
