Description
Osbert House is an early 19th-century painted stucco villa, altered, situated on the north-west side of Peppard Road, near Notley Place. Originally listed as No 91 Peppard Road (Caversham Hall) and No 91 Surley Row, the building is a large three-story structure with an unusual two-story portico and verandah facing south. The portico features coupled Doric columns supporting an entablature and a low balustrade above. A first-floor verandah is defined by slender coupled columns. A molded cornice runs below the second floor, and window sills are accented by upright cresting along the eaves. Further detailing includes a smaller cornice and blocking course over the second floor, and a hipped slate roof. The building has three windows on the second floor, each with either a drip mould or architrave, often accompanied by shutters. Six-light transomed windows are present on both the ground and first floors. The central entrance has a 20th-century eight-panel door within a plain raised surround. A later 19th-century angled two-story bay has been added to the right side. A more modern three-story brick extension is situated further to the right. The interior, reconfigured around the 1920s, incorporates oak panelling and a balustered staircase. Access to the house is via a short avenue of lime trees from Peppard Road.
