Description
The Burrill Monument is a chest tomb located about 2 metres south of the chancel and 2 metres east of the porch of the Church of SS Peter and Paul. It dates from around 1800 and is constructed of ashlar stone. The monument features recessed fluted pilasters at each corner, which have sloping shafts, moulded caps, and bases set on a plinth with a projecting base. The lid has a quadruple roll moulded edge and a weathered top slab with a moulded and swept base.
On the long side facing south, the inscription reads: "Sacred to the memory of Ann Burrill who departed this life - July 1829 aged 63 years. Also Elizabeth, granddaughter of the above and daughter of John and Martha Burrill ------- who died September 6th 1828." The long side facing north has the inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth wife of John Burrill who departed this life May 30th 18--. Also of John Burrill husband of the above who died July 26th 1816 aged 90 years. Also of John Burrill Son of the above who departed this life ---------- 1801 aged 31 years." The end panel facing west states: "Sacred to the memory of John Hamilton Burrill Esq of East Cosham who departed this life Nov. 20th 1819 aged 32 years. Also of Caroline wife of the above J.H. Burrill who departed this life Oct 27th 1818 aged 31 years. Also of their infant daughter who died 1818." The left corner of the lid facing south is broken.
