Description

The lamp columns located on the esplanade east of Southsea Castle were erected in the early 20th century, likely by Drew-Bear, Ransome and Perks, Engineers, London.

These six lamp columns are spaced at intervals and feature tall round columns with ornate fluted pedestals, each having a moulded base and cap. Atop each pedestal is a bulbous iron leaf motif, followed by a further fluted column leading to the main cast-iron column, which has a Corinthian capital positioned two-thirds of the way up. The top of each column is adorned with intricate moulded and fretted ironwork, prominently displaying the Portsmouth City crest at the center, along with paired swan neck arms that support two lanterns. The original lanterns are hexagonal, made of iron frames with glass panels. The pedestals of the columns feature the manufacturer's plate and another Portsmouth city crest. Some of the lanterns have had replacement parts. As of 2022, these lamp columns are numbered 36 to 41.
