Description

The lamp columns located on the esplanade east of South Parade Pier were erected in the early 20th century, likely by the engineering firm Drew-Bear, Ransome and Perks from London.

These eighteen cast-iron lamp columns are spaced at intervals and feature a tall, round design with an ornate fluted pedestal that includes a moulded base and cap. Atop the pedestal is a bulbous iron leaf motif, followed by a further fluted column leading to the main cast-iron column, which has a Corinthian capital positioned two-thirds up. The top of each column is adorned with intricate moulded and fretted ironwork, prominently displaying the Portsmouth City crest at the center, with paired swan neck arms that support two lanterns. The original lanterns are hexagonal, framed in iron and made of glass. The pedestal of each column features the manufacturer's plate and another Portsmouth city crest. Some lanterns have broken, missing, or replacement parts, or have undergone repairs. As of 2022, these lamp columns are numbered 15 to 32.
