Description
The Lodge at Highland Road Cemetery is a cemetery lodge built around 1854 by Thomas Ellis Owen, showcasing Gothic architectural style. Constructed from red brick in stretcher bond, it features a slate roof and two tall brick chimneystacks. The building is L-shaped and has one to two storeys.
On the west elevation facing the road, there is a projecting gable adorned with fretted bargeboards. The first floor has a sash window without glazing bars, while the ground floor features a three-light canted bay. The roof slopes down to arched openings that likely originally formed a porch but have since been enclosed.
The north elevation also displays a gable with fretted bargeboards, a sash window without glazing bars on the first floor, and a blocked three-light window on the ground floor. The east or rear elevation includes a gable with fretted bargeboards, a two-light window on the first floor, and a square bay on the ground floor, accompanied by a two-light mullioned window and an arched doorcase.
This lodge remains largely unaltered and is part of a grouping of Gothic style structures in the only cemetery designed by Thomas Ellis Owen in Portsmouth.
