Description
The Anglican Chapel at Highland Road Cemetery in Southsea is a cemetery chapel built around 1854, designed by architect Thomas Ellis Owen. It is constructed of grey stone rubble with Bath stone dressings and features a slate roof, which likely once supported a spirelet. The chapel is a rectangular structure with two bays.
On the exterior, the west end showcases a gabled bellcote with pseudo-machicolations beneath it. Below this, there is a blank lancet window and a gabled porch featuring a pointed arch supported by stone colonnettes, with a double door that has scrolled iron hinges. The north and south sides are adorned with carved stone brackets at the eaves and arched windows that include double trefoils and quatrefoils above, separated by stone buttresses. The east end has a larger arched window with triple trefoils below and a pattern of quatrefoils above, all under a dripmoulding supported by stone corbels. Additionally, there is a deep plinth and a decorative band on the east end only.
Historically, Highland Road Cemetery is notable as the only cemetery designed by Thomas Ellis Owen. This Gothic-style stone chapel provides an interesting contrast to the nearby Byzantine-style Non-conformist chapel, which is built of polychrome brickwork.
