Description
The three lamp columns located on the esplanade west of South Parade Pier were erected in the early 20th century, likely by Drew-Bear, Ransome and Perks, Engineers, London.
These lamp columns are made of cast iron and feature glass lanterns. Each column is tall and round, with an ornate fluted pedestal that has a moulded base and cap. Atop the pedestal is a bulbous iron leaf motif, followed by a further fluted section leading to the main cast-iron column, which has a Corinthian capital positioned two-thirds up. The top of each column is adorned with intricate moulded and fretted ironwork, featuring the Portsmouth City crest at the center and paired swan neck arms that support two hexagonal iron-framed glass lanterns. The pedestals of the columns display the manufacturer's plate and another Portsmouth city crest. As of 2022, these lamp columns are numbered 33 to 35.
