Description

This building comprises two former bank premises, now divided into two houses at numbers 86 and 88 St Thomas’s Street, dating from the early and mid-19th century with later alterations in the late 20th century. The exterior is stuccoed. Number 86 has a Welsh slate roof, while the roof of number 88 is concealed. A rendered stack is positioned centrally. Number 86 is one storey with a basement, featuring three bays. A 20th-century door is located on the left-hand side, fitted with a fanlight and set within a round-arched surround, approached by a flight of seven stone steps with attached iron railings. To the right of the door are two round-headed sash windows, the left with 16 panes and the right with 12 panes, with pilasters flanking the central sash. Above the door is an unmoulded band, and the building is finished with a parapet coping broken over the centre window. A 20th-century dormer is present. Number 88 has a deep, vermiculated plinth, heavy rusticated quoins, and wide pilasters flanking the windows. A five-panelled door is situated on the right-hand side, within a splayed corner, featuring a fanlight and a round-arched surround with voussoirs aligned to the courses and a vermiculated keystone, flanked by attached bonded Doric columns and pilasters. To the left is a large sash window and three similar sashes to the return, each of 12 panes. The building has an entablature above with a wide projecting cornice and guttae, topped with a balustraded parapet. The interior was not inspected.
