Description
The Grigg and Swale Monument is a chest tomb dating from around 1793, located approximately 26 meters west of the northwest corner of St Andrew's Church in Portsmouth. It is constructed of ashlar and features a podium with splayed sides, a moulded cap and base set on stone balls off the plinth, and a weathered top slab positioned behind the lid. Each side of the tomb's die has a panel with a shell motif at each corner.
The long east-facing side bears an inscription dedicated to Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Griff, the wife of James Grigg Esq of Purbrook, who passed away on July 17, 1793, at the age of 36. It also commemorates James Grigg, who died on June 16, 1821, at the age of 70. The long west-facing side is inscribed in memory of Louisa Swale, the widow of Colin Richard Swale RM and daughter of James Grigg Esq, who was born in May 1799 and died on February 6, 1885.
The south-facing end of the tomb has an inscription for Anne Swale, the second daughter of Colin Richard Swale and granddaughter of James Grigg Esq, who was born on May 6, 1827, and died on January 25, 1881. The north-facing end commemorates Major Henry Swale R.M., son of Colin Richard Swale and grandson of James Grigg Esq, who died on December 20, at the age of 42.
