Description
The Knight Monument is a chest tomb located approximately 20 meters west of the northwest corner of the Church of St Andrew in Farlington, Portsmouth. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar stone. The monument features recessed pilasters at each corner, which have plain sloping shafts, and are topped with moulded caps and bases set on a plinth. The lid has a quadruple beaded edge and a weathered top slab. The long side facing south bears an inscription that reads, "Sacred to the memory of Martha, wife of James Knight of ----- who departed this life October ---- in the ---- year of her age" and "Sacred to the memory of James Knight who departed this life ---- December in the ---- year of his age." The dates on the inscriptions are illegible, and there is some ivy and vegetation growth on the monument.
