Description

The Working Men's Social Club, dated 1870, is an ornate and mannered example of Victorian vernacular architecture, situated on London Road in Stony Stratford. The building is comprised of three irregular blocks, two and three storeys in height. The facade is faced with cobbled, herringbone, and upright-laid limestone, divided by rubble lacing courses, with brick dressings, quoins, and an offset to its low plinth. Scallop tiles are laid in horizontal colour bands. A crested ridge and a ridged chimney on No. 18 are notable features. The left-hand block has a gable end to the street, featuring bargeboards and a two-storey, three-light bay with sash windows. The central block is recessed, displaying a raised top-lighting feature, and two high windows with terracotta shafts and slightly pointed heads. A projecting ground floor section features a lean-to roof. The central entrance is ornamental, with a pointed arch, roof shafts, buttresses, and a raised gable, leading to panelled double doors. The right-hand block (No. 18) projects again, with a two-storey and attic section featuring two windows with pointed relieing arches. The first floor has two-light sashes, with a brick mullion on the left. The ground floor includes a five-light rectangular bay to the right, and the attic boasts three-light sashes within half-timbered gables. The return to the north-west displays decorative brickwork and a half-timbered gable with a moulded wood bargeboard.
