Description

No. 30 is a house located on Rochester Street in St. Margaret's, dating from the 18th century, with later extensions and part of a 17th-century building incorporated at the rear. The house is primarily constructed of brick, while the older section is timber-framed and clad, with the rear rendered. The roof is covered with concrete pantiles and Welsh slates. The 17th-century part, which is set back from the street, now serves as a rear wing to the main 18th-century house, which itself was extended at the back in the 19th and 20th centuries, creating a double-depth plan. The building is mainly two and three storeys high.

The front elevation was originally a symmetrical three-storey, three-window arrangement, but it has been altered by the addition of a two-storey canted bay on the right. The parapet features a cornice band and stone coping. The second storey includes Diocletian windows with sashes, except for the centre window, which has a pivotal casement. There is a plat band between the first and second floors, with tripartite sashes in the left window bay (two:four:two and four:twelve:four panes respectively). The canted bay has four-pane side sashes and tripartite sashes at the centre on each floor. The doorcase features a pediment with Ionic attached columns and a half-glazed door. The basement area is protected by spear-headed railings, which are raised at the centre over a gate for deliveries.

The rear elevation has been significantly altered, featuring a late 20th-century room and balcony above. Inside, there is a Georgian staircase, which has been largely renewed, with a wreathed rail and turned newels. A 17th-century winder stair remains, along with some original framing and sections of the roof.
