Description
The Officers' Block and attached front basement railings at Brompton Barracks were built between 1804 and 1806 by James Wyatt, the Surveyor of the Office of Works, and Lieutenant Colonel P. D'Arcy RE for the Board of Ordnance. This building served as an artillery barracks and later for engineers. It is constructed of brick with limestone ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof over the pavilions.
The structure has an axial plan consisting of back-to-back barrack rooms with transverse stairs. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has a symmetrical front that originally included matching 14-bay ranges. The façade features a cornice and parapet, connected by a central three-bay section with giant Tuscan columns supporting an entablature and balustrade. The ground floor has round-arched openings, including a central open archway and flanking windows, while the first floor features flat-headed windows with 6/6-pane sashes.
