Front And Perimeter Walls To Raised Gardens To Rear Of Former Officers' Terrace

The front and perimeter walls to the raised gardens at the rear of the former Officers' Terrace in Chatham Dockyard date back to around 1731. These walls are constructed of brick, with some areas rendered. The garden has a rectangular plan and features a two-storey, one-bay range. The main wall is rendered and coped, with buttresses, and includes doorways, coal stores, and some 20th-century garage doors that align with the mews opposite the Officers' Terrace. Inside the front wall, a flight of steps leads up to the raised gardens, which are enclosed by a tall wall.

Historically, many of these gardens were originally designed in a formal layout. The rear gardens are characteristic of the officers' housing at naval yards and represent a significant and important aspect of this remarkably complete early terrace.
