Description
The Church of St. John the Baptist is a parish church dating back to the 12th century, significantly enlarged in the 13th century and with 14th-century aisles. It was restored in 1889 by H. Bensted. The church is constructed from ragstone and flint, with plain tiled roofs. The west tower, originally built in the late 12th century, was buttressed in the 14th century and later dressed in brick. It features large clock faces on the parapet. The nave is 14th century, with separately gabled north and south aisles. The chancel was enlarged in the 13th century and has two south lancet windows and three north lancet windows.
Inside, the Early 13th-century tower arch is notable. There are three-bay arcades; the north arcade is earlier than the south. The chancel arch dates from the 14th century. A 15th-century piscina is present on a shaft. Stained glass in the east window was installed by Kempe in 1892. Wall paintings depicting the Last Supper and the Passion are located above the chancel arch.
