Description

The walls to the east of the Church of St John the Baptist are Grade II listed and were formerly part of the palace of the Bishops of Rochester. They likely date from the 13th century, although Bishop Hamo de Hethe repaired and enlarged the palace between 1322 and 1337. The walls are constructed of flint and ragstone, with some sandstone dressings. They extend 50 feet along the east side of the churchyard and include a return wall at the north end. There are three lancet windows with cusped heads on the east side, featuring segmental rere-arches.
