Description

Nos 143, 143A, and 145 comprise a group of buildings with a shop frontage dating to around 1880, concealing earlier structures. The rear ranges vary in date, with elements from the 17th and late 18th centuries, and the mid-18th century. The shop frontage, while not of special interest itself, incorporates elements of the earlier buildings. It is constructed of gault brick with a Welsh slate roof, and features a 20th-century shop front extending across the whole, including a recessed central entrance which is canted to the first floor. Horned sash windows are found on the first floor, set in heavy architraves, and topped by a coped parapet.

Behind Nos 143 and 143A is a range comprising two distinct elements: a 17th-century baffle entry house and, to the north, a later 18th-century house (now derelict). The 17th-century house is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a Kent-tile roof. It follows a three-unit baffle entry plan with a central stack, containing two rooms to the north and one to the left. The fenestration is scattered, including two attic windows of differing sizes, one of two lights, and another with only the top part of the sash surviving. The first floor features a 16-pane hornless sash on the left, a 1:2:1 oriel window on the right, and a small casement over the baffle entry. The ground floor has three doorways, the baffle entry retaining its surround, canopy and shaped brackets, and a four-panelled door. The interior reveals some original framing, with fragmentary remains of 17th-century moulded cornices on the ground floor. Better preserved ceilings are found on the first floor, featuring cyma mouldings and arched entrances, with some panelling in the attic and other minor joinery including fielded panel cupboard doors with H L hinges. The roof is a collar-rafter side-purlin construction. The adjoining 18th-century brick extension to the north includes a re-used brick dated 1776. The interior of this 18th-century section was not inspected.

Finally, a red Flemish bond brick range extends to the rear of No 145, featuring a Kent tile roof. It is two storeys high with a five-window range. The sash windows (predominantly six-pane, with one sixteen-pane window) sit under segmental rubbed brick arches with stone sills. A doorway is accompanied by a surround and canopy, with a six-panel door. A window above the doorway is blocked, and there is a projecting eaves cornice. One brick is dated 1761.
