Description

St Catherine's Hospital, built in 1805, is a set of almshouses located on Star Hill in Rochester. The charity itself dates back to 1316. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond with slate roofs and consists of a single-storey block that is 14 bays long, arranged in a pattern of 3-3-3-3-2 bays. It features a Tudor-Gothick style, with nine casement cross windows beneath four-centred flat rubbed brick arches. Five of the bays are slightly advanced, showcasing chamfered jambs and two concentric rubbed brick arches, which were originally doorways but have been converted into windows. The building has deep projecting eaves and six chimney stacks, three of which are set diagonally. The three central bays have a coped parapet with a projecting eaves that includes an inscription. There is an attached brick parapet wall with contemporary spear-topped railings at the front. The rear facade mirrors the one facing Star Hill, while the sloping hill to the south allows for a two-storey elevation on King Street. There is also a later addition to the Delce Street frontage, which has been significantly altered but retains some Tudor-Gothick details.
