Description

This is a late 18th-century house with attached wings, located on Star Hill in Rochester. The house is built of Flemish bond gault brick, with a tiled roof. The central three-bay section is three stories high, while the single-bay wings are two stories high.

The central section features three ground-floor and three first-floor pilasters, each with impost detailing and semi-circular brick arch heads. The ground floor has two 12-pane sash windows, the first floor has three 15-pane sash windows and the second floor has three 12-pane sash windows, all with glazing bars under flat brick arches. There are three good or cast-iron segmental bowed neo-classical balconies. The rebuilt parapets sit above the windows. The doorcase has pilasters and a fluted frieze, leading to a five-panel raised and fielded door with a delicate lead glazing bar fanlight.

The wing on the right has a tripartite sash window on the ground floor, with 8-pane outer sashes and a 1-pane central sash, all with glazing bars and pilaster divisions. A 2-light late-20th century casement window is on the first floor, set within a semi-circular brick arch with imposts. There is a flat brick arch above the window. The wing on the left has a carriage arch where the jambs and lintel remain. A 20th-century plate glass shop window has been inserted into the archway's opening. An original door, complete with knocker and a delicate lead glazing bar fanlight in a rectangular frame, is also present. The first floor features a plate glass window under a flat arch, set within a semi-circular brick arch with imposts, both with rubbed brick detailing.

Inside the central block, the hall has a dentil cornice and arch. The staircase is off-axis to the right and has single stick balusters and a swept rail. The upper flights cantilever to allow for large sash windows to provide light through two floors. The two-bay rear facade features sash windows with glazing bars.
