Description
No. 20 Star Hill is an office building that was originally a house, dating from around 1790 with some alterations made around 1880. The structure is built of stock brick in Flemish bond, featuring stone coping and a hipped roof that is now covered in 20th-century pantiles. The main section on the right has three storeys and a basement, with three windows that have 12-pane sashes set in reveals on the upper floors. The ground floor features a large late 19th-century seven-bay mullioned and transomed square bay with panelling below supported by brackets.
To the left, there is a two-storey section where the first floor has a 12-pane sash window. The ground floor includes a late 19th-century mullioned and transomed window, along with an original round-headed doorcase on the right side, which has a keystone, fanlight, and a late 19th-century open pediment on brackets. A flight of stone steps leads up to the entrance, which is flanked by 20th-century railings. The rear elevation has 12-pane sashes and a three-light canted bay window with glazing bars on the first floor. The left side elevation has been renewed in 20th-century brickwork.
Inside, the building features a fine staircase with a mahogany handrail, stick balusters, and column newel posts, along with a panelled dado with pilasters. The left side ground floor room has a round-headed doorcase and a plumed cornice. The main ground floor reception room showcases a cornice with a variation of triglyph and patera decoration, while the main first floor reception room has a cornice with architraves, palmettes, and plumes. The first-floor staircase hall exhibits cambered work, and the top floor of the staircase features an ovolo moulded frieze.
