Description

FIRBY SE 28 NE Christs Hospital 4/88 Almshouses 5.5.52 - II Almshouses now 2 houses. Dated 1608 converted C20. Rubblestone with ashlar dress- ings and graduated stone slate roof. 1 storey, 7 bays. Central bay 2 storeys, gabled and breaking forward. Chamfered plinth. Central board door with chamfered surround and 4-centre-arched lintel; cornice above with a plaque in moulded architrave bearing Latin inscription "Hospital for the poor of the parish of Bedall, Founded 1608 in the reign of James I". Above this a 6-light double-chamfered mullion-and-transom window under cornice and plaque with moulded architrave. Paired board doors with chamfered surrounds and 4- centre-arched lintels between bays 1 and 2 and 5 and 6. Board doors in chamfered surrounds with flat lintels to right of bays 3 and 7. Chamfered 3-light mullioned windows throughout. Stone coping. Bellcote with bell on apex of central gable. End stack to left and 3 ridge stacks.
