Description
The remains of St Catherine's Almshouses, located on Catherine Street, date back to the 15th century and were endowed by the will of John Stevens, proved in 1460. This two-storey building is constructed from Heavitree stone and originally housed 13 poor men. Some original square and pointed stone windows can still be seen on the curved frontage facing Catherine Street and Chapel Lane. Additionally, there are pointed stone doors and windows from three or four of the dwellings that open onto a very small internal court. Excavations in this court, following damage, uncovered two fragments of Roman pavement, as well as a fireplace.
