Description
1 and 2 Catherine Street are two former gabled houses, likely dating from the 15th century, which stand three stories tall with overhanging fronts. Although dated to 1450, the basis for this date is unclear. The houses feature Georgian sash windows and casements, with one oriel window on the first floor of each side, and there are reproductions of 17th-century slate-hanging. The projecting shop fronts facing Catherine Street and St Martin's Lane have small slate roofs. Inside, many original features remain, including screens, fireplaces, garderobes, and late 16th-century painted decoration on the joists and beams. There is also evidence of cruck construction within the buildings.
