Description
No 40 on High Street is a very interesting late 17th century building that stands three stories tall and features three windows. Its red brick front shows Dutch architectural influence, with stone quoins and a cornice that has heavy ovolo moulding. There are short lengths of cornice above the windows and a semicircular pediment above the central second-floor window. The brickwork includes panels, and the building has late 18th century sash windows. The shop front is modern and shared with No 39. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. Behind the red brick facade, there is an older timber-framed building, although no internal features are visible. Nos 39 to 47, which are consecutive, form a group.
