Description
Nos 41 and 42 on High Street are a pair of timber-framed buildings dating from 1564. They rise to four storeys and feature two gables, with each storey oversailing and supported by a moulded beam at the first floor level. One side wall is made of stone and is corbelled forward. The first floor has two six-light square oriel windows with moulded timbers, one of which has carved brackets. The second and third floors have a four-light and a two-light oriel window, respectively. The front of the buildings has been roughcast, and some timbers have been applied. There is a modern shopfront and a slate roof. Inside, there is a carved oak board dated 1564, and parts of the house may be older, with remains of the Close wall found in the basement. Other original features include staircases and stop-chamfered beams. Nos 39 to 47, which are adjacent, form a group with these buildings.
