Description
5 Cathedral Close is a Grade I listed building, believed to have been constructed in 1688. The front is made of red brick with stone quoins and features two storeys and attics, with five sash windows that have glazing bars and moulded architraves. It has a heavy bracket cornice and a slate roof adorned with three gabled dormers. The rear wall is constructed of stone. At the west end of the front, there is an arched entry that includes a notable garden doorway with brick piers topped with stone caps and vases. Inside this part of the house, there are two impressive late 17th-century panelled rooms and a staircase. The front railings have been removed. Surrounding the courtyard, there is a stone house on three sides, dating from various earlier periods, with the back range believed to be the refectory of the Annivellars' College. This includes a medieval stone entrance arch, a 15th-century oak screen, and a stone fireplace. All the listed buildings in Cathedral Close are part of a group.
