Description
Milton Cottage is a Grade II* house located on Boley Hill in Rochester. It dates from the 16th century and early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is timber framed, featuring a combination of roughcast and weatherboarding, topped with a Kent tile roof. It has a long, low two-storey range, and its original function is uncertain.
The exterior displays an irregular arrangement of three windows, with a single bay returning to the right where it connects to Old Hall. The windows include two and three-light casements, and the return features a six-light window on the ground floor. A large chimney stack is situated at the junction of Milton Cottage and Old Hall. On the rear, there is a small stair light, and the weatherboarding has been largely renewed, although some timber framing is still visible.
Inside, the cottage contains four rooms. On the first floor, there is plaster panelling painted with naturalistic foliage and floral motifs within formal surrounds, which is a slightly lower status version of the painted wooden panels found in Old Hall. The interior also features intersecting ceiling beams that are stopped and chamfered, along with a side purlin roof supported by wind braces.
