Description
The Thatched Cottage is a Grade II* listed house located on the east side of High Street in Lindfield. This building dates back to the 15th century and is a Wealden hall-house with an early 17th-century L-wing. It features a timber frame with a thatched roof and a 16th-century multiple filleted brick chimney stack. The cottage has two storeys and four bays. The front is close-studded with plaster infill and includes a moulded bressummer. Curved brackets support the eaves of the recessed centre on the first floor. There are four late 19th-century casement windows, along with a window on the ground floor of the original open hall. The right-hand side has a blocked original four-centred arched doorway that once connected the original open hall to the service end. The north elevation is partially close-studded with curved braces and partially square framed, featuring later brick infill to the east.
