Description
The Green Lion Hotel is a public house, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations and a refronting in the early 18th century, and further extensions in the early to mid-20th century. It is reportedly timber-framed and originally cased in English bond brick, now painted to the front and sides. The roof is tiled, with brick stacks on the ridge and sides, and a hipped roof.
The plan is of a single-depth building with a rear single-storey extension added in the 20th century. The front of the building is two storeys high with an attic and basement, and has an 8-window front. It presents a near-symmetrical façade, featuring a plinth, a moulded plat band, and a moulded coping to the parapet on three sides. Centrally, a doorway has a bracketed timber pediment, architrave, and a 20th-century panelled door. A blocked doorway with an architrave is situated to the left of the main entrance. A pair of mid-19th century 6/6-pane sash windows flank the central doorway. The remaining windows are 18th-century 6/6-pane sashes in exposed frames, regularly spaced. A left-hand first-floor sash window is set apart, and there are three gabled dormers in the roof.
The rear of the building features a central hipped stair tower, tile-hung above the eaves, along with a vestigial wing with a central stack and sashes on each side.
The ground floor interior was altered in the mid-20th century. A central, rear dogleg staircase has an early 19th-century rail and elliptical arches on either side.
The asymmetrical entrance and window layout suggest an even earlier construction date, which may be confirmed by further investigation.
