Description
The Crown Public House is a public house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. It features a timber-framed structure that is rough rendered, with a painted brick return. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, has an outshot at the rear, and a grey slate band along the front projecting eaves. There is a left external part that has a plastered red brick chimney stack, and an off-centre right chimney stack that is positioned forward of the ridge.
The building is two storeys high. On the first floor, there are three vertically sliding sash windows. The ground floor includes a 20th-century red tiled bay on the left, with small paned fixed windows to the right and left of a blocked doorway. There is a central 20th-century gabled porch with a door that has a top light. To the right, there is a small paned vertically sliding sash window with a moulded surround. Adjacent to this is a 20th-century single storey extension that features a window similar to the one on the ground floor right.
Internally, much of the frame is concealed, but the ground floor right bays showcase fine moulded ceiling beams. There is a large chimney stack that dates from the 17th century or earlier. The first floor includes jowled storey posts and stop-chamfered bridging joists. A large cambered tie beam on the ground floor left return has been cut through or partially covered by a 20th-century fire surround, which may indicate it was originally part of an earlier single storey building.
