Description

The war memorial stands in Brantham Industrial Estate and was erected in 1948. It is constructed of stone and bronze. The memorial is stepped, featuring a cross base plinth surmounted by a square-based pedestal and a tapered shaft. An inscription on the west side commemorates those who died in the Great War (1914-1919), listing their names and reading, "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THE GALLANT/ MEN WHO LEFT THIS PLACE/ TO FIGHT IN THE CAUSE/ OF LIBERTYAND JUSTICE/ AND WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ (NAMES) / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOREVER MORE." A second bronze plaque beneath this inscription commemorates those who died in the years 1939-1945, also listing their names. The names on the east face of the memorial represent those employed at the Brantham factory, while those on the west face are from a sister factory at Hale End, Walthamstow. The memorial was unveiled on 7th November 1948 by Mr L. P. B Merriam and serves to remember those employees who lost their lives during both World Wars. This is an unusual memorial, recognising the workforce of a specific company rather than residents of the community. The memorial is designated at Grade II for its historic, architectural and social interest as a reminder of nationally and internationally significant events and as a distinct tribute to the fallen of two world wars.
