Description

A range of five oasthouses, dating from around 1850, located on Stratford Lane in Rainham. Originally a store range with east-facing oasts, the complex includes two square oasts at the south end and three round oasts behind the main range. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, featuring a gable stack and a tiled roof.

The north elevation of the long store range has a single-window gable with two doorways and a moulded stack. The rear block has a three-window range. The windows are mostly 6/6-pane sashes, with 3/6-pane sashes on the south return. A central recessed bay contains late 20th-century entrances. There are two first-floor former loading doorways at the south end. The oasts have inserted windows, angled brick eaves, and timber cowls. A truncated pyramidal roof is visible on the northeast corner.

The interior was altered during conversion around 1980, with the addition of internal walls and floors. Despite these changes, the exterior remains complete and represents a historically significant survival within its urban setting. The buildings are now used as houses and a theatre.
