Description
No. 174 High Street is a house that has been converted into a retirement home. It was built in the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century and again in the late 20th century. The exterior features brick stuccoed gables, a brick stack on the left side, and a slate roof. The style is Early Georgian, and the plan is double-depth.
The building has two storeys and an attic, with a five-window range. It is double-fronted and includes a plinth, a plat band, and barge boards. The entrance features a timber doorcase with fluted pilasters and triglyphs supporting an open pediment. The doorway is segmental-arched with panelled sides and a ten-panel door, where the top pair of panels are glazed. The windows have rubbed brick segmental arches and 6/6-pane sashes in flush frames. There are three large late 19th-century gabled dormers with glazed sides, 6/6-pane sashes, barge boards, and finials.
At the rear, there is a central doorway, which is partly included within a mid-20th-century building. The interior has been altered and partly rebuilt in the late 20th century.
