Description

St Margaret's House, a former private residence now part of the King's School, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a double depth central entrance and stair hall plan with services located at the rear. The building stands two to three storeys high and has an asymmetrical street front with a six-window range, flanked by lower ranges of varying heights (three windows to the left and two to the right). The brickwork is painted, and the façade includes a parapet with a cornice band and stone coping. The windows are sashes set in exposed recessed frames, with six, twelve, and sixteen panes on the second, first, and ground floors, respectively, all under flat brick arches and with stone sills.

The doorcase, located left of centre, features a cornice, frieze, and pilasters, with a panelled door and overlight in panelled reveals. The window to the right of the doorway is blocked. To the left, there is an extension with three sashes on the first floor (two set in altered openings) and another sash with a blocked window on the ground floor. To the right, another extension has three partially blocked windows on the ground floor and two sashes on the first floor, both extensions topped with a coped parapet and cornice band.

Adjacent to St Margaret's House, connected by a round-headed arched doorway, is the rear wall of another building featuring three large raised panels, a parapet, cornice band, and plinth, all in exposed brick. The garden front of St Margaret's House is symmetrical with a four-window range, showcasing nine-pane hornless sashes on the upper floor and eighteen-pane sashes with external shutters on the ground floor. The ground floor has a shallow central pediment adorned with acroterions and wreaths, while the roof is hipped and covered with slate.
