Description
The Royal Squadron Hotel is a large building dating from the early 19th century, situated on Union Street. It is a building of group value, contributing to the character of the area. The four-storey building has five windows on the top floor. The front is stuccoed, with the ground floor rusticated. A continuous iron balcony runs along the first floor. Plain pilasters flank the entire front above the ground floor and extend upwards above the parapet. Between these are three pairs of coupled and fluted Corinthian pilasters, which do not project as far as the pilasters and run from the first to the second floor. Two large four-light bay windows, each containing French windows and individual iron balconies, are located between the Corinthian pilasters on the first and second floors. A cornice sits above the bay windows and is continued along the front, supported by the Corinthian pilasters. A modillion cornice sits above this. On the third floor, five windows are flanked by plain pilasters, with a frieze above, surmounted by a long recessed panel and a dentilled cornice topped with a crested parapet. The original glazing bars are intact. An entrance to a yard is located on the ground floor at the south end of the building.
