Description
The Valentine Gray Monument is a Grade II listed structure erected in 1822. Made of Portland stone, it features a small square pedestal with inscribed panelled sides and a short obelisk topped with an urn finial. The inscriptions read: "To the Memory of Valentine Gray The Little Sweep Interred January the 5th AD 1822 In the 10th Year of His Age. In Testimony of The General Feeling for suffering Innocence. This Monument Is erected By Public Subscription." This monument was established by public subscription in memory of Valentine Gray, a boy chimney sweep who died due to mistreatment by his employer, Benjamin Davis. It is a notable example of a small late Georgian public monument.
