Description
41 South Street is an early 19th-century building that features mid-19th-century decorations added to its windows and has an altered roof. The structure consists of two storeys and a double attic, constructed with grey headers and red brick dressings. It has a steeply pitched gable roof covered with shaped tiles. Each attic contains two dormers; the lower dormers break through bracketed wooden eaves that have a scalloped edge.
On the first floor, there are two windows: one is small and set in a wooden frame, while the other is a broad recessed sash window with glazing bars and a rendered block sill. Above these, there is a low-pitched gable adorned with bargeboards and a finial, which is similarly styled to the ground floor window. The ground floor features a recessed door with six fielded panels and a narrow rectangular fanlight above.
An unusual doorcase has been added, flanked by rendered pilasters with reeding that rise to half the height of the door. This is topped with cherub heads and carved wooden brackets that support a gable with bargeboards and a finial, matching the decorative treatment of the windows. The building is noted for its distinctive decorative details.
