Description
God's Providence House is a late 17th-century building located at No 12 St Thomas's Square. It is constructed of red brick and has two storeys with four windows, one of which is blocked. The building features a hipped old tile roof and a prominent heavy modillion cornice, along with one dormer. The gable end facing Pyle Street is capped with brick.
Access to the building is through a passage that has a doorway adorned with a finely moulded shell hood supported by elaborate wooden brackets, along with a well-crafted moulded wool frame and a three-panel fanlight. There is also a later side door that includes a small cornice and a traceried rectangular fanlight. Above the main door, a small rectangular stone panel bears the inscription "WIE 'God's Providence in my inheritance', 1701."
The front façade facing St Thomas's Square is cement rendered and features an impressive early 18th-century double bowed shop window with a central door, which is framed by delicately moulded cornices and reeded frames. The door is modern but includes a delicately traceried rectangular fanlight.
Inside, the building retains a fine original staircase, some panelling, and contemporary fireplaces. God's Providence House is part of a group with Nos 12 to 14.
