Description
The Newport War Memorial, unveiled in 1922, is located in a paved area within St Thomas’s Square, to the south-west of the Church of St Thomas, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial is surrounded by iron railings.
Constructed from Portland stone with bronze panels, the memorial features a wheel-headed cross on a tall, tapering octagonal shaft that rises from a pedestal with a moulded foot, set on a two-stepped plinth. The arms of the cross are adorned with nailhead moulding, while the sections of the wheel have bead moulding.
On the north face of the pedestal, there is a recessed bronze panel with the inscription "ANNO/1914" and "DOM/1918" at the top, flanking the town seal. Below this, the inscription reads: "THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE/ OF NEWPORT/ TO COMMEMORATE THE NAMES/ OF HER GALLANT SONS/ WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE./ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”. An additional bronze plaque beneath this panel states: "ALSO THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE 1939-1945 WAR/ AND THE GRATEFUL THANKS OF/ THOSE WHO RETURNED." The other sides of the pedestal feature recessed bronze panels listing the names of those who fell in the First World War, accompanied by the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
The names of the fallen from the Second World War, along with the inscription "1939-1945," are recorded on three stone tablets affixed to the foot of the pedestal on the east, south, and west sides. Notably, the tablet on the east side also includes one name from the First World War.
