Description
The Akeley War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and is situated in the churchyard of the former Church of St James, which has since been demolished. The memorial was restored in 2008 by HW Masons and Sons of Newport Pagnall.
It features a stone wheel cross on a slim shaft, which rises from a moulded plinth that sits atop a chamfered base. In 2008, granite tablets were placed over the original inscriptions on the plinth, replicating the original text. The lettering on these tablets is incised and painted in black.
On the north face of the memorial, the inscription reads: "PASS NOT THIS SHRINE/ IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE/AND MAY YOU LIVE AS/NOBLY AS THEY DIED," with nine names listed below. The south face bears the inscription: "IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE/OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The east and west panels are blank.
