Description

Keats Inn, originally built as Shanklin Club around 1880, features a blend of Gothic and Mughal architectural styles. The building is constructed from rubble with a modern concrete tiled roof and includes wooden and cast iron detailing. It stands one to two storeys high on a sloping site and consists of three bays. The west elevation showcases a central two-storey half-hipped section adorned with fretted bargeboards, flanked by one-storey sections that have gables with fretted bargeboards and a quatrefoil motif; these sections do not have windows and are supported by elaborate wooden brackets.

An elaborate two-storey balcony is present, with the ground floor supported by circular columns and the upper floor by chamfered square columns, all featuring curved cast iron brackets and railings. The balcony projects from a port-cochere at the center. The side elevations include one hipped and one half-hipped gable, and the balcony extends to the east elevation, which has a prominent large half-hipped gable with a central quatrefoil motif and intricate fretted wooden bargeboards, flanked by two smaller gables that also display fretted bargeboards and a quatrefoil motif. The first floor features three French windows, while the ground floor has casement windows. Stone balustrade steps lead to the center of the building. This structure shares stylistic similarities with the Chalet cafe at Rylstone Garden and may have been designed by the same architect.
