Description
The Chalet Cafe is a cafe built around 1880, designed in the style of a Swiss chalet. It is constructed from Isle of Wight stone rubble and features a slate roof and a wooden verandah. The building is two storeys tall and has a square plan. The north elevation showcases a wide gable with plain bargeboards, a pendant, and a finial that overhangs on wooden brackets adorned with a quatrefoil motif. There is a decorative stone band and four pointed French windows on both floors. A prominent feature of the cafe is the two-storey balcony and verandah that wraps around three sides, supported by wooden columns and a fretted balustrade. The ground floor is decorated with tiling featuring a Greek key design. The east elevation includes two windows, while the first floor has a pointed French window and one ogee-headed window. The ground floor features a pointed-headed door surround with a fanlight to the left and an ogee-headed window to the right. The design of this building is likely inspired by the Swiss chalet at Osborne House and shares stylistic similarities with Keats Inn, possibly indicating it was created by the same architect.
