Description
Fisherman's Cottage Public House is an inn that was originally built as a cottage around 1817 by Mr. W. Colenutt, who created a path through Shanklin Chine and charged visitors a fee. The building has undergone significant alterations and extensions in the 20th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a half-hipped thatched roof with a red brick chimney stack on the left side. The structure is roughly L-shaped, with two storeys; the main part has three windows while the left wing has two, all of which are now modern wooden casement windows. Some windows have stuccoed architraves, and there is one triple eyebrow dormer on the south elevation. The left wing has a simple doorcase with stuccoed architraves and a modern penticed weather hood above it. The main part includes a French window, while the left side elevation features a door with a quoined surround. The rear elevation has a loading door and a modern flat-roofed extension. From 1845, James Sampson, Mr. Colenutt's son-in-law, provided visitors with hot brine baths by piping sea water to a large tank and heating it in a copper boiler. In 1970, the bath was relocated just inside the lower entrance to Shanklin Chine.
